Nice tutorial. A lot of people need one like this according to what i see in the model-makers groups ;)

Regarding the decals, i have experienced that it is advantageous to paint the surfaces where the decals are getting applied to with glossy clear varnish, wich evens out the underground so the decal will stick to it better, also you will in most cases no longer see the edges of the decal, wich itself is usually more glossy than paint for military models. After the decal is applied and dried, another layer of clear varnish protects the decal from scratches, and makes the edges nearly invisible, as the decal and the surrounding paint get the same surface structure (that of the varnish). Before that, i suggest you test if the decal doesn't get damaged by solvents depending on the varnish you use.
To finalize the model i would recommend to spray the whole model with slik-flat clear varnish, after wich lenses and other glossy parts can be painted with the above mentioned glossy clear varnish.

Also, there are coloured primers, especially for military models, e.g. Army Painter.
